A powerful, award-winning drama about an octogenarian struggling to cope after his wife's stroke. Retired music teachers Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) are in their eighties. They used to be outgoing and gregarious, but ever since Anne suffered two strokes the couple have retreated to their comfortable Paris apartment. Terrified Anne has begged her husband never to put her in a home or a hospital. But as her mental and physical deterioration continues, Georges struggles to cope. Occasional visits by their adult daughter Eva (Isabelle Huppert) serve only to underline how much their world is shrinking. Best known for the extraordinary 'Hidden' and 'The White Ribbon', Michael Haneke adopts a smaller canvas for this intimate drama. The sensitive yet unflinching 'Amour' addresses issues of love and loyalty as one partner fades away. Destined to be revered as one of the great films about old age, it deservedly won the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
