WEST PRICE HILL, Ohio (WKRC) - Friday morning parents and concerned residents held a rally for school crossing safety outside of Western Hills and Dater High School.

This week alone three Cincinnati Public School students were hit by cars on their way to school.

The group is calling for changes such as adding crossing guards and improving lighting.

Cincinnati Police did have a cruiser sitting outside Thursday morning with its lights on but that didn't stop a driver from hitting a student in the crosswalk.

Speakers at the rally pushed for action and change to the absence of safety measures taken.

One of those rallying was Shawna Rodriguez whose daughter Gabby was hit and killed in September while crossing Harrison Avenue.

She said, "It's got to stop. Our kids are wearing dark uniforms our kids are getting up and getting on buses at 6 and 7 in the morning when it's dark. They are crossing roads there's no lights, there's nothing that identifies them as students."

It's been confirmed that changes are happening.

Cincinnati Police said the school resource officer and another officer will be outside during the start of school.

That's in addition to three crossing guards who will also be helping stop cars and getting students to class.

Due to the increase in students struck, the City of Cincinnati has announced it is looking for people to become crossing guards. If you're interested in becoming a crossing guard, you are asked to call the city at 513-352-2505.
