Hundreds of people are expected to picket outside the Durban SABC offices today against the retrenchment of the public broadcaster's employees. The picket to be led by COSATU leaders in the province is a series of demonstrations against the job cutting measures announced by the SABC. The public broadcaster confirmed that it intends to lay off 981 permanent staff and 1,200 freelancers as a result of a planned restructuring in a bid to cut costs and save about 440 million rand per annum. The SACP in KwaZulu-Natal has also voiced its concerns about the move. For more on the story, we now cross to our reporter, Mlungisi Khumalo who is outside the SABC Durban office.
