EMPOWERED FIRST LADY
Hillary Clinton first came to spotlight when her husband, Bill Clinton, became president of the United States in 1993, making her the first lady. During her eight years as first lady, Hillary was highly involved in the policy making process. She played an important role in the appointment of high level officials, making her most powerful first lady since Eleanor Roosevelt. However, those years were also plagued with drama. When Bill Clinton was impeached because of his extramarital relationship with Monica Lewinsky, Hillary chose to keep her marriage.

CLIMBING POLITICAL STAGE
When her husband's term was coming to an end, Hillary's term as a public servant was just beginning. She became the only first lady in history to hold a public office when she became New York Senator in 2001. During her eight years in the Senate, Clinton supported the War in Afghanistan following 9/11 attacks. She voted in favor of the Iraq War and visited US troops in the country. Hillary Clinton was repeatedly criticized by the progressive wing of Democrat Party for being too hawkish.

CLINTON’S HARD TIMES
In 2008, Hillary Clinton ran for president. She lost democratic primaries to eventual winner Barack Obama, despite entering the race as a front runner. Barack Obama appointed Clinton as Secretary of State when he was elected president. Hillary served in the position until 2013. During her 4 year term, she strengthened US - Russia relations and worked for reorientation of foreign policy with a focus on Asia. However, most will remember her term with Benghazi, where the US ambassador was killed in a terrorist attack on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in 2012. In the aftermath of the attack, State Department officials were criticized for denying requests for additional security prior to the attack. As Secretary of State, Hillary took responsibility for the security lapses. Later she testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee where she was harshly criticised.

FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT?
After she left State Department in 2013, most people expected Hillary Clinton to run for president in 2016. She did not surprise anyone when she announced her bid on April 12 this year. With strong support from both wealthy businessmen and party delegates, Hillary seems to be the most formidable candidate in securing the Democratic nomination. If she wins the 2016 elections she would write history by becoming the first female president of the United States.
