A test of the 1883 Daimler Flash Carburetor. A Bernzomatic torch was set up so the flame was near the carburetor outlet ( actually the engine intake pipe). Retreating back to a safe distance the air was turned on. As the air bubbled through tiny holes in the internal float, explosive gas exited the pipe - instantly igniting. This process was repeated several times. The purpose of this was to test the internal flame arrestor. If flame were to go back into the carburetor it would explode. The flame arrestor did its job very well. In this case it was a two stage 40 micron custom made sintered bronze element. Next step to see how well the carb works on Daimlers 1883 experimental engine !
