If I could explain the philosophy of Stoicism through a quote, I would choose the following by Epictetus: “Difficulty shows what men are. Therefore when a difficulty falls upon you, remember that God, like a trainer of wrestlers, has matched you with a rough young man. Why? So that you may become an Olympic conqueror; but it is not accomplished without sweat.” Stoicism helps triumph over the many vicissitudes that will occur over our lives by challenging us to change our perspective on these events. Instead of falling into negative mindsets whenever a difficulty arises, Stoicism invites us to try utilise the event as a means of growth. In many cases the events the happen to us that we label as ‘negative’ or ‘bad’ have the “seed of equal or greater benefit” as Napoleon Hill stated. Another Stoic quote by the emperor Marcus Aurelius also highlights the importance of the obstacles we face in life as a means of shaping us. Marcus Aurelius states in his meditations: "The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way." Remember that when you are dealing with adversity that the experience itself can be used to build yourself up. It’s all about the mental shift, and the outlook you take on the event. This Stoic change in perception will increase the quality of your life. No longer will negative situation immobilise you, they will become tests of your Stoicism. Stoicism is no magic pill, however, it is the closest thing to one in regards to living the good life.
