Reclaimed Cypress Dining Table Top | Hybrid Hand Tool/Power Tool Woodworking

In this video, I use some wood that was given to me to make a reclaimed cypress dining table top. The process is pretty straightforward. The boards were planed and given to me by a friend. I chose the best sections from those boards to get the length and width needed for my table top. Then, I cut the pieces to length, straightened/jointed the edges with a Stanley 8c jointer plane, and then, I glued everything up in sections, using cauls to keep everything flat. After that, I went through the process of flattening the overall top using a scrub plane, my Stanley 5c, and then my Woodriver 4 1/2 smoothing plane. I didn't go crazy on the flattening, and in the end I used a power sander to really knock down the high spots and remove tear out because of the really tricky grain. After that, I mixed some stains to get a color combination I liked and applied a few coats of it. Then, I did 2 coats of wipe on poly, and two coats of paste wax, that I buffed out with a cloth. Then, I just swapped out the tops by removing the screws holding the old top down, and placing the new top and securing it with the same screws. In all, it was about 2 day's work, maybe 8 total hours. And well worth it! We are VERY pleased with the result. I hope this inspires you to maybe think out of the box if you need a new this or that. Rather that getting/making a whole new item, maybe you can simple replace, modify, or swap out some of the parts to give it a fresh look. Thanks so much for watching!
