Macedonia's Prime Minister Zoran Zaev has cast his vote in the country's name change referendum. Citizens are voting on whether to rename their country from North Macedonia to the Republic of North Macedonia. This is a bid to settle a long-running row with Greece, and unlock a path to NATO and EU membership. Supporters of the name change, including Zaev, argue that it is a price worth paying for admission into the organizations. The country has been struggling for recognition of its name since its birth in 1991 when the former Yugoslav republic declared independence. Greece argues that the name belongs solely to its own northern province called Macedonia, and accuses its Balkan neighbor of harboring territorial ambitions.
