While designing an autonomous surface water vehicle, U-M Professor Guy Meadows and his team determined that the highest amount of energy wasted in surface vehicles comes from traveling up and down the dips of the water surface. So the team took their cues from birds in nature, who skim over the surface of the water, to design their new vehicle. About the Professor: Guy A. Meadows (http://aoss.engin.umich.edu/people/gmeadows), director of the Ocean Engineering Laboratory (http://aoss-research.engin.umich.edu/labs/oel/) of the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Science (http://aoss.engin.umich.edu/) at the University of Michigan College of Engineering (http://www.engin.umich.edu).
