Rewired State's director Emma Mulquenny and developer/designer Josh Pickett talk about the TV Hack Day they're organising at MIPCube, the pre-MIPTV innovation event. They explain how a hack day involves a group of developers coming together to make something new out of existing data and APIs (application programming interface, the common language apps use to communicate). The end results can be apps, websites or widgets, but the 'hackers' only have 48 hours to make them. At the end of the process, the results are presented and winners chosen, says Emma. So how does this apply to TV? As Josh explains, such developments will further TV's development beyond the television, helping shows become "experiences" across multiple devices. And as Emma adds, social TV is an obvious area for developers and the TV industry to work together right now. So the hope is that "the next big thing" in social TV will be created and showcased at MIPCube. Especially as the hackers should be super-inspired by spending those 48 hours on a boat!
