After a couple uplifting songs, you knew it was time for something darker. This is perhaps my favorite original. Details below lyrics.
------------------------------------
How long
You've been taking the blame
Replaying the sequence
Reliving the shame
One slip of the wheel
Left you shattered and stunned
Your distance voice wailing
What have a done?
{Dig free, dig free}
You buried yourself
When they buried me
Unbury yourself
It's time to dig free
We were just kids
Reckless and dumb
Nobody's angry any more
There's nothing to hide from
So how long
Must this debt be paid?
One life is gone
One can be saved
CHORUS REPEATS
--------------------------------------
"Unbury Yourself" is about a man burdened with guilt after killing his best friend in a tragic teenage car accident. The song is actually from the perspective of his friend, who is urging him to forgive himself and move on. It isn't intended as any social commentary, I just thought it was an interesting story.
As a lot of my songs do, "UY" starts simply and builds, this time with more of my "Alice and Chains" influences showing. Hopefully you can stick it to the end and let me know if I pulled it off.
As is often the case, I had a lot of help pulling this together. Mike, from channel doctorcastille, was generous enough to offer his perc and bass chops to the tune. I had all the guitars worked up (well over 20 tracks at times!) but the drums were eluding me. Those two were immediate magic.
On top of that, Mike sent along a fantastic synth track that took me a while to appreciate. I sometimes struggle with unexpected track contributions, uncomfortably burying them for a while before finally realizing they want to take a lead position. This was one of those times. ;-)
Oh, and before I forget again, I neglected to mention that Mike lent stellar piano and bass tracks to "All Fall Down." Thanks, my friend. The songs would never have reached their targets without you.
Thanks for listening and the continued support. I really appreciate it.
