A rose by any other name might not, in fact, smell as sweet. In June this year Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa announced a name change for Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape in the Government Gazette. As required by law the purpose of gazetting was to publicise the Minister's decision for objections or comments. The city is to be known as Makhanda after the Xhosa prophet, philosopher and military man, who led a failed attack against a British garrison stationed there in 1819. He was one of the first black political leaders to be imprisoned on Robben Island. But a lobby group Keep Grahamstown, Grahamstown has objected to the name change saying the minister and the committee that oversaw the process did not follow all the necessary processes to do so.
