Ford has a long history of leading the way in motorsport technology, something that is probably best highlighted by the dominance of the Ford Cosworth DFV engine in Formula One following its launch in 1967.

Used by a host of leading teams, the 408bhp V8 engine became the default choice for fourteen years thanks to its thunderous performance and unrivalled reliability.

In that time, no less than 12 Formula One Championships were won with the Ford DFV engine, helping to turn the likes of Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart, Emerson Fittipaldi, Mario Andretti, Nelson Piquet and Keke Rosberg into household names. The introduction of smaller capacity, turbocharged engines in the early 1980s was the only reason that the 3-litre engine's dominance didn't continue.

But even now Ford continues to innovate in motorsport: for example, the introduction of the global Focus ST-R touring car providing a tin-top race chassis that can be used in competitions across the world, or the smart EcoBoost engine technology used by the Ford Abu Dhabi Fiesta RS WRC cars.
