In Ghana a number of different varieties of Mangos are grown, amongst them : Kathe, Alfonso, Jaffa, Hadan. All Mango differs in taste, weight and look from each other. Some of the species grow up to 3 kg in size and some are smaller, yet with more fragrance. Traditionally Mango is grown in Ghana in its native form. This species are most resistent to pests, including the feared devil of mangos - the mango weavil, a dreaded insect that invades the mango seed and destroys the fruit as a result. The newer types of Mango have become an easy victim to this pest, with their softer peel the insect has no difficulty in penetrating the same and cause havoc in Mango farms. Insecticide is the only solution here, and brings us to our modern problem. Botanically, this exotic fruit belongs within the family of Anacardiaceae, a family that also includes numerous species of tropical-fruiting trees in the flowering plants such as cashew, pistachio.
