This was filmed at the end of a day of creative exploration during the making of the dance theatre piece, Motherland, about the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the theme of belonging. The piece was directed by Eugene Skeef and toured nationally as a production of sampad, the Birmingham based arts agency founded by Piali Ray. Before Eugene's family could take him home at the end of a long day he offered the ensemble a spontaneous closing ceremony, borrowing some of the Motherland text by Tunde Olatunji. The majority of the cast were not musicians and had not sung with any confidence before these creative sessions, but by the time the show went on the road the seams between what are normally regarded as different artistic disciplines in the West (dancer, singer actor, etc.) had dissolved.
