June 27  is the date of one of our favorite holidays, Screw Day. Today we slow it down to commemorate the Houston pioneer, DJ Screw. It isn’t DJ Screw’s birthday or the day he died. And don’t listen to those heads that tell you this was the day Screw discovered pitch control.

The origins of Screw Day come from Screw’s 'Chapter 012: June 27th' mixtape. June 27, 1996, was the day that members of the Screwed Up Click recorded and 35 minute and 45 second freestyle, which is featured on the tapes B-side. Over a chopped and screwed version of Kris Kross’s “Da Streets Ain’t Right,” seven members of SUC spit on the track that would become a historic Houston track. It featured Big Moe, DeMo, Key-C, Yungstar, Big Pokey, Kay-Luv and Haircut Joe.

Although June 27 is now tied closely to Screw, it is actually the birthday of his friend, DeMO, who has two verses on the session. The story goes that Big DeMo overslept the original recording session, so Screw reorganized it with the same lineup as a present.

After releasing more than 300 mixtapes, DJ Screw passed away on November 16, 2000. However, his legacy has been cemented and these days his slowed down, highly narcotic sound has become an influence on hip hop from all regions.
