(KUTV) Dozens of student volunteers try to intercept shoppers on one of the busiest food shopping days of the year. Shoppers were reminded to focus on Utah's hungry as they stocked up on supplies for their Super Bowl parties this weekend. Students from Viewmont, Woods Cross and Bountiful had a friendly competition to see who could raise more money and pounds of donated food items - all going to the Bountiful Food Pantry and local charities that help feed the hungry. Their efforts have been ongoing for months, with students organizing masquerade balls, laser tag tournaments and this food drive Saturday with all proceeds going toward the Souper Bowl of Caring. They'd raised thousands of dollars and were ranked top in the state for their fundraising. But they say it just feels good to try and help those neighbors in need. Saturday, the students were in the front of a number of different grocery stores, filling hats with cash and bins with donated food. Organizers say they didn't reach their goal of $30,000 and 30 pounds of food, but they believe the youth work group has been able to make a huge impact on the lives of many.By Amy Nay (Copyright 2014 Sinclair Broadcasting Group)
