PM, Cabinet: Punishment Counters 'Compassion In Islam'

The Cabinet meeting today denounced the public caning of a lesbian couple by the Kuala Terengganu Syariah Court, saying that it did not reflect justice and instead, painted a negative perception of Islam as a religion. Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad said in certain circumstances, Islam allows for counselling or lighter sentences to be imposed on grounds of allowing the criminals or wrongdoers a chance to reform.
