South African artist, born Wilhelmina Jacoba Viviers in Johannesburg on 26 November 1934. She attended Helpmekaar Girls High at the same time as the famous South African opera singer, Mimi Coertse (she was in St 7 when Mimi was in matric). After school she qualified as a teacher, also singing in restaurants in Johannesburg and Benoni after hours. In 1961 she won a LM Radio talent competition, with the prize being a trip to London and an appearance on television. 

With the help of well-known South African band leader, Dan Hill, she recorded her first 7” single, “Kleine Nagtegaal”, in June 1966. She also appeared in the film “Hoor My Lied”, together with iconic South African singer, Gé Korsten, in 1967, and they sang a duet called “Die Heidelied” which has become one her best loved recordings. She also appeared in the films “Jy Is My Liefling” (1968) (with the theme song becoming, arguably, her most well-known recording), “Die Danie Bosman Storie” (1969) and “Lied in My Hart” (1969), also starring Gé Korsten and Mitzi Stander.

She has recorded more than 40 albums and 500 songs in her career, later forming a duo with Lance James which became one of the most popular in the country. Together they recorded a number of albums, including “Bymekaar” (1968) and “Weer bymekaar” (1982). From 1975 onwards she focused her efforts on recording gospel music.

She received 3 Sarie awards during her distinguished career, with 2 of her albums going Gold, 1 Platinum and 1 Double Platinum. Although she turned 80 in 2014, she still appears on stage, with her last performance being at the Centurion Theatre in Pretoria on 31 October 2015, as part of the Country Legends Concert.

In 1989 she married Willie van Blerk and they reside in Roodepoort.
