From BSE to GM. Obesity to world hunger. Food is News. We have a growing population on the planet, yet resources are finite. Behind the headlines is a complex web of market and political forces that are changing what we eat as we seek to control the world's food system. Climate change adds a new desperate urgency and scale of the problems facing us and highlights our need for action. We share a world of stark contrasts. At the moment 1 billion people live below the poverty line. Yet, in 2008 bonuses paid to Wall Street bankers were greater than the total amount of aid given to Africa. By 2050 we will see an increase in change in world population adding 50% more mouths to feed. Almost all of this increase will be in sub Saharan Africa and South Asia, India. What this amounts to is a series of disasters waiting to happen.
