Doctors walk past man bleeding to death on Nigerian Hospital floor

It is the stuff of nightmares but for Mr Austin it happens every time he walks into one of our Nigerian hospital... and he described one of the regular, terrible occurrences for us:

"They were rushing to look for doctors to help but the doctors were just walking across him... they don't care," says Mr Austin, a marketer in Lagos.

Regards the incident Mr Austin describes, he does not know what happened to the victim - only that they arrived at the hospital unconscious and had obviously had some terrible accident because they were bleeding all over the Nigerian hospital floor - "see blood everywhere!"
But the victim was then left, bleeding, on the floor of the emergency waiting room as people rushed about looking for help and were instead told to bring money to pay for the man's treatment.

"Are we actually human beings at all? Another human being seeing another human being and crossing over him while people are running and saying 'bring money, bring money'!"

Nigeria Hospitals and doctors request money before treating victims because often the treatment is expensive and many people cannot pay - but Ikeja General Hospital is a government-backed hospital.

It is horrifying to hear Mr Austin describe how the doctors simply continued to walk past the man dying on the floor of their hospital without helping him. Even if he could not be saved, surely there is some dignity to lifting him off the floor and easing his pain?

"I have witnessed a lot of people and problems - especially in this Ikeja General Hospital," says Mr Austin. "Even if you have one million Naira - is it the money that will help the person? No, it is you!"

In the end, the person died - "It pains me when I go to that hospital," says Mr Austin before he leaves.
