A domineering mother seizes the chance to regain control of her adult son in this dark portrait of Romania's ruling class. Well-connected, 60-year-old architect Cornelia (Luminita Gheorghiu) seems oddly obsessed with her thirtysomething son, Barbu (Bogdan Dumitrache). She laments that he's an ingrate who rarely comes to visit. Everything changes when she's pulled out of the opera and told there's been a terrible accident. Barbu has run over and killed a 14-year-old boy. Storming into the small police station where he's being held, imperious, manipulative Cornelia accuses the cops of threatening her 'baby'. The victim's poor and angry family are powerless to intervene as she proceeds to pull strings to prevent Barbu being charged with manslaughter. For Cornelia, it's also an opportunity to get the pampered overgrown child back under her thumb. This searing, blackly comic critique of corruption in Romanian society pivots on another compelling performance by veteran actress Luminita Gheorghiu.
