From the time capsule: From small things, big things sometimes emerge. You could say that's what happened in the field computer technology. On September 12, 1958, Texas Instruments employee Jack Kilby helped set that revolution in motion when he demonstrated his miniaturized integrated circuit board to his bosses. At the time, the machinery involved in office computing was big and expensive. The goal of scientists and manufacturers was to shrink that equipment down to a smaller, less costly size. Kilby's integrated circuit, which paved the way for the microchip, proved it was possible to downsize the technology and make it more portable. And the rest, as they say, is history. Or, so it was 30 years hence, in 1988, when reporter Marcus Jones visited the Boston Computer Museum on the anniversary of Kilby's groundbreaking discovery.
