The emergence of so-called "big data" is set to transform our lives immensely, and to a large extent has already done so. The opportunities presented by it could save lives, cure medical conditions, recalibrate our economy to distribute resources more efficiently. Yet big data's emergence also poses threats to large sectors of the country, traditional methods of employment may become obsolete, our democracies may not be designed to deal with the political advertising big data could create. In short - should we be terrified of this brave new world, and does it pose an existential threat to our humanity?
