The misery of hay fever can be lessened if you change some basic habits. You'll still have hay fever, but at least you won't have to wear a Hazmat suit to breathe.

Warning
Seek emergency treatment if you experience difficulty breathing, dizziness, or lightheadedness.

Step 1: Identify sources
Identify the sources of your hay fever allergy by getting testing by a certified allergist. Keep your test results handy and consult it often to stay alert.

Tip
Run your air conditioner to filter and purify the air and eliminate pollens in your home.

Step 2: Monitor social contact; wash your hands
Monitor your social contact when friends visit your house; avoid lots of physical contact and wash your hands often.

Step 3: Get rid of pollen-producing plants
Have someone rid your yard of ragweed and other pollen-producing plants on your allergy checklist. Better safe than sorry.

Step 4: Wear a mask
Wear a face mask outdoors during tough periods. Reduce the time you spend outside during the peak hay fever season, especially dry and hot days.

Step 5: Wash clothes, shower
Change and wash your clothes regularly to lessen the possibility of bringing allergens into the home. Shower after coming inside.

Step 6: Dust, vacuum, launder
Dust, vacuum, and launder frequently to reduce invaders from outside. Keep your windows closed.

Step 7: Discuss vaccine
Discuss a ragweed vaccine with a physician. As a last resort, take injections to control your reactions.

Did You Know?
As of 2008, over 7 million children, nearly 10 percent of the child population in the U.S., had hay fever.
