Here is the NEC (National Electrical Code) 2014, Article 406.4: I kept saying NEMA because I have several projects going on and i'm installing NEMA outlets for a welder and generator transfer switch.. But back to the code Its a cut and paste i'm not typing that out :) The NEC (National Electrical Code) 2014, Article 406.4: "If arc-fault circuit interruption is required, an arc-fault circuit interruption device should be installed. These devices do not require a grounding conductor, so can be installed in a circuit without a ground." Not only can an AFCI be used on a non-grounded circuit, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for use on a non-grounded circuit since that is more likely to pose a fire risk than a grounded circuit.
