Spicer surprised us with a few brief visits this month ! This sweet ole tough boy disappeared for a very long while. This time he showed up with mangled fingers twisted in every possible direction, ears chewed-up and splitting which gives him a little bit of a tough boy image but he's really quite a lovable guy. Every time he has visited over the past four years he surprises us how resilient he is despite the painful battle injuries he's endured. On these recent visits, he was buddied up with a couple yearling male companions we've named Bert and Ernie. They carefully watched Spicer with intense curiosity wondering as to why he was offering some high-fives and a few other behaviours (aka tricks) he had learned as a youngster. These were taught so we could treat his past injuries. The power of positive reinforcement training is never forgotten which Spicer proves and helped us to easily identify him apart from others. A lifespan for a wild raccoon is short. If they can survive past the first three years, their odds increase. Unfortunately most wild raccoons still will live a short life due to the inherent dangers that's always around them - getting hit by cars, people trapping, shooting, fights with other wild animals, etc. Spicer has been badly injured several times and each time he has surprised us how he's beaten the odds. NOTE: Our rescue raccoons resides in a region where there hasn't been a case of raccoon rabies for over three decades which is tracked by the local public health department. We are fortunate to be able to observe and professional work with a variety of wildlife species since we reside next to a protected wildlife preserve. Our rescue raccoons lounge and play on our terrace as well as use it as a thoroughfare. No children nor pets are ever harmed, especially the wild animals captured in these videos.
