Charge sheet filed against Irom Chanu Sharmila; hearing to begin from May 13

Imphal east police has filed the charge sheet against Irom Chanu Sharmila in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal east today. Sharmila has been charged attempt to commit suicide under IPC 309. Advocate Khaidem Mani will be her counsel. Irom Chanu Sharmila has been fasting since November 2000 demanding repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 from Manipur. She has been routinely produced at the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal east since she has been remanded to judicial custody. Talking to the media, Khaidem Mani said the hearing will begin on the 13th of this month. Irom Chanu Sharmila said she used fasting as a weapon to meet her demand. She also expressed her displeasure at her confinement for her non violent movement.
