CINCINNATI (Scott Dimmich) -- "We're getting a lot of pillbugs, sow bugs, people calling with spider issues," said Glenn Scherzinger with Sure Thing Pest Control With temperatures and dewpoints rising, Scherzinger said ants, spiders, and other insects are emerging. "A little bit more heat, a little bit more humidity, we've had these days in the upper 70s and 80s, and that just gets them moving because it's a perfect environment for them," said Scherzinger. Local 12 went along for an inspection with Glenn, and he suggests keeping mulch away from your home's foundation. Scherzinger said, "It just creates a natural entrance way for insects to get in. It's also a great area for termites to get in because they love digging and living in this mulch, and they'll get fine a nice entrance way in there." Keeping standing water off away from your house can also keep insects away. "You can have flies, mosquitoes, all kinds of different insects breeding in an area like that, so it's important to check cans, even ones you don't use on a regular basis.You've got things like this where you've got tarps around a house or maybe around firewood that they don't pay a lot of attention to. And within a matter of a couple of days, these are all going to be adult mosquitoes," said Scherzinger. Mulch close to your deck can also invite incests towards your home. Scherzinger said, "Even though that's pressure treated wood underneath there, that's all going to start to hold moisture, and it's a great area for the insects." While bugs can get into your home through small cracks, securing your windows will also keep insects out. "Having the screens in there - if they fit properly - that will keep a ton of flying insect issues down," Scherzinger said. Utility areas should also be checked during a home inspection. Scherzinger said, "The air conditioning lines, the gas lines, even when they vented out the new heating and cooling systems, she made really sure - even thought that they came out through the window - they are really sealed well." Regardless of the time of year, Scherzinger makes it very simple, seal up your home as best as you can. Get the obvious cracks taken care of.
