In Avila, Spain, hundreds of people rode horses through bonfires on Tuesday, the eve of Saint Anthony's Day. Anthony is the patron saint of animals and the traditional bonfire activity, which dates back to the 18th century, is meant to purify the animals and protect them for the year to come. Critics say this tradition breaks animal protection and public entertainment show laws. Authorities said that no horses were injured during the event.
