A riff is a repeated chord progression, pattern, or melody, often played by rhythmic instruments. The riff is the base of the musical composition. They are most common in rock music, funk, and jazz. But a repeated riff can also be used as the basis for a solo. It’s a great way to “hook” the listener in, because it’s easily understood.
