Lake Peyto is the highest mountain lake in the Rockies. It is a surreal place. The extraordinary colour in spring is caused by glacier milk, minuscule pieces of rock transported by the water from melting glaciers which reflect the blue-green colour in daylight. The porcupine hibernates in winter. In summer, it often lives in trees, where it looks for its food. A porcy has some 300,000 spines on its body - an excellent defence. If it is threatened, it acts like a cactus. There are fables which say that the animal shoots its spines, spelling doom for its foolhardy attacker. This is nonsense, a porcy is well-mannered and prefers to run away rather than to land itself in a difficult position. Be careful: you are entering bear country! Everywhere you go, you see the signs. And if you see a grizzly like this, it is wise to avoid it. Info HighRes Imagery: http://www.stockshot.nl/ © All Rights reserved by Fauna Film B.V. http://www.faunafilm.nl
