History of San Bernard

The San Bernardino mountainous route crosses San Bernardino pass in the Swiss canton of Graubünden with a summit altitude of 2'066 m.

It connects the valleys Rheinwald on the northern and Misox on the southern side of the main road 13. Areal distance to the pass is four kilometer till Hinterrhein (at 1620 m located) and 12 km to Mesocco (790 m).

At the summit the European watershed is located. The language border between German and Italian linguistics are located here.

It received its name after the previously Mons avium or Birds mountain called pass, as it was called in the 15th century, when a chapel in honor of St. Bernardine of Siena was built.

In German it was the historical Bernhardinpass (Bernhardi mountain) which replaced the old pass route the 20th century route to San Bernardino Pass.

Despite the name similarity there is no relation between the passes "large" and "little" San Bernardino.

2020 I crossed San Bernardino again , and snowy conditions were again encountered. Driving from Ticino into Graubuenden, snow hampered traffic, and it was necessary to drive extremely careful.

San Bernardino will remain a risky road due to fast weather change and quick snowfall which can happen at any time in such elevation. I simply continued, driving up from Chiasso, where the road was clear, and almost summer weather accompanied me on the way.

Once reaching San Bernardino the road went almost invisible due to heavy fog at first, and snowfall later.

Drivers are advised to be extra vigilant on this road as the conditions are unpredictable.
