Sorption is an important but typically overlooked method of chemical penetration into concrete. Sorption occurs when the concrete is not saturated and moisture is placed on the surface. The empty pores will draw the moisture into the concrete. The more empty the pores are then the more sorption will have an impact on outside chemicals into concrete. If your concrete is in a very dry or arid environment then sorption is especially damaging. Since there are few concretes that are saturated, sorption seems to play a role in chemical penetration into concrete. More details about this test method can be found here: Khanzadeh-Moradllo, M., Ley, M.T., “Quantitative measurement of the influence of degree of saturation on ion penetration in cement paste by using X-ray imaging”, Construction and Building Materials, 141 (2017) 113-129, http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.conbuildmat.2017.03.0070950-0618/.
