SAA reported a loss of 5.6 billion rand for the 2016/2017 financial year. The embattled airline attributes this to a drop in market share due stiff competition and negative sentiment against the airline as well as increasing operating costs. The national carrier also blames the lack of a coherent, integrated strategy and limited business and commercial skills. SAA expects the airline to break even only in 2020.
