Get ready to shake it!  This video walks you through what I had to do to prepare my mailbox for the winter snow plows.  This mailbox needs to be ready to handle the snow that is thrown from the plows.  If the screws are tight and the mailbox doesn't fall apart when you shake it, then you stand a good chance to make it through a normal snow season.  
I had an issue with my mailbox getting hit was some incredible amounts of snow, as seen in the video, and it resulted in the treated wood post snapping in two.  I was able to to a quick temporary repair with some Fastenmaster bolts that held it together very well.  In fact, I ended up forgetting to replace the post last spring and now I'm hoping that it will make it through another winter.  I don't think it's worth completely replacing the post right before winter, since it's more of a cosmetic issue than a structural issue.
