(9 Oct 2018) The European Union Foreign Policy chief said Tuesday the bloc was fully aligned with the United States' position on the disappearance of a Saudi writer in Istanbul.
"We expect a thorough investigation and full transparency from the Saudi authorities on what has happened," Mogherini told a joint news conference with Portuguese Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva in Lisbon.
Jamal Khashoggi, 59, went missing while on a visit to the consulate in Istanbul for paperwork to marry his Turkish fiancée.
He had been living since last year in the United States, in a self-imposed exile, in part due to the rise to power of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the son of King Salman.
Turkey said Tuesday it will search the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul as part of an investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance.
The announcement came as the Washington Post published a surveillance image of Khashoggi walking into the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, just before he disappeared.
Turkish officials have said they fear the columnist was killed inside the premises.
Saudi Arabia has called the allegations that it killed Khashoggi "baseless" but has offered no evidence over the past seven days to show that he ever left the building.
Santos Silva, meanwhile, commented on the death of a Venezuelan opposition councilman arrested on allegations of plotting to kill President Nicolas Maduro.
Venezuela's government said on Monday that Fernando Alban took his own life by leaping from the 10th floor of the state intelligence agency's headquarters.
But opposition leaders denied the official version and a few dozen of Alban's supporters gathered outside the building yelling "Maduro killer!" contending that he had been murdered.
Santos Silva lamented the death and said the Portuguese Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities was in Caracas and would gather information so the Portuguese government could issue their position.
Santos Silva added, "we have insisted with the Venezuelan authorities that the political dialogue in Venezuela cannot happen with detentions of participants in that dialogue."
