The planet Jupiter and Earth's moon had a close encounter the night of 21 January 2013. They appeared to do the tango and danced together all night long! Spectacular pairing! Across much of the United States and southern Canada this was the closest Jupiter and the moon appeared relative to each other. This will not happen again until the year 2026. The moon was about 248,000 miles (400,500 kilometers) from Earth, while Jupiter was nearly 1,664 times further out in space at a distance of 413.8 million miles (665.9 million km). Monday's stargazing event was called an appulse - a phenomenon caused by perspective only. There was no close physical approach in space between the two objects. The moon slowly moved toward and ultimately passed just below the giant planet. Videography by Ken Kramm, Conroe, Texas, USA, Canon Vixia HF G10, Final Cut Pro X.
