The ubiquity of compact crossovers has created an intensely competitive market. With the 2017 Escape, Ford hopes to outperform the likes of the Mazda CX-5, the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, and Toyota’s RAV4. We found the ’16 Escape’s version of Sync 3 good, but lacking some polish at times. The 2017 model should work out those issues and will also include Sync Connect – a smartphone app allowing owners to lock, unlock, locate, and even start their Escapes remotely. The interior also receives an updated front cupholder design and a heated steering wheel, and a stop-start engine management system helps to improve the Escape’s fuel efficiency. The Escape is now powered by either a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder or a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. Both engines employ EcoBoost technology, with the 2.0-liter delivering more power, but slightly worse fuel economy. The naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline four from previous Escape S trims has been discontinued. Safety is of critical importance to many Escape shoppers, and the ’17 iteration includes a host of features. Lane-keeping assist and active cruise control join forward-collision warning to mitigate crash situations. The Escape starts at $23,600 but can rise toward the mid-$30,000 range.
