Audi struggled to compete in the midsize luxury segment in 2016, so the German automaker has doubled down, releasing an all-new 2017 A4. Is it enough to re-take precious lost ground?

The A4 utilizes one engine in the U.S. market: a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. Producing 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, the reworked engine will compete with the base and mid-range options in the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, but shoppers will need to upgrade to the Audi S4 if they want top-tier performance from a midsize sedan.

The 2017 A4 features a beautiful, if restrained, interior. Leather and other soft-touch materials cover the cabin, and the standard controls are simple to use. What sets the A4 apart from its competitors is Audi’s “virtual cockpit.” The customizable TFT display is located where a typical gauge cluster exists, and delivers functionality beyond anything else on the market.
