New metal, new engines, and the same reputation: The 2018 Volvo XC60 promises comfort, luxury, and unrivaled safety. Will the improvements put it alongside the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class?

Built on Volvo’s new Scalable Product Architecture, or SPA, the XC60’s wheelbase has grown 3.6 inches but the vehicle’s weight should remain well below that of the 3-row XC90. Powering the XC60 will be one of three engines: Either a turbocharged 4-cylinder, a turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder, or a turbocharged and supercharged hybrid…you guessed it, 4-cylinder. Maximum power output will sit at 400 horsepower but fuel economy figures have not been announced.
Expect the XC60 to deliver all the bells and whistles in terms of safety, courtesy of Volvo’s City Safe feature suite. New this year is a head-on-collision mitigation system, which relies on the car’s Steer Assist technology. Also available will be Volvo’s semi-autonomous driving Pilot Assist technology.
