The BMW M2 is a sports coupe aimed at reviving the emotive driving experience of the classic 2002tii and the original E30 M3. The question is, with limited interior space, a starting price north of $50,000, and exclusively available with rear-wheel drive, will anybody buy it?

Launched in 2014, the 2 Series featuring the M235i as its most performance-oriented variant. That car eked out 320 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque from its turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine, but the 2016 M2 improves those numbers to 365 hp and 369 lb-ft. While many purists will opt for the 6-speed manual transmission, the optional 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) is faster, delivering a 4.3-second sprint from 0-60 mph. Although rear-wheel-drive-only may be daunting for some drivers, an advanced limited slip-differential helps keep the M2’s power under control.

The interior oddly features carbon fiber trim alongside hard plastics, but the overall environment remains relatively upscale. A Harmon Kardon premium sound system handles Satellite Radio, and M2’s widescreen infotainment system with navigation is managed by BMW’s iDrive and touchpad controller.
