Just a quick videos showing one of the perils of old vacuums. So I was happily vacuuming away with my Philips T320 giving the flat a good going over when I heard a loud pop. I turned round to see loads of smoke billowing out of the Philips so I ran and quickly plugged it out. Apologies for my profanities at the end of the video, I realised that the smoke was getting worse and the suppressor had actually caught light, so I had a frantic dash trying to open it up before the whole thing went up in flames. Supressors, are fitted to most older vacuums and in the days when we didn't have digital TV and radio, they were there to suppress any interference caused by the motor. Today, they are useless however and tend to fail quite spectacularly with age. So they are best removed altogether to be honest. I've already got a burn mark on my rug from a Constellation that quite literally took off with a bang. I find old Hoover's tend to be the worst and scariest for it, However i've had an Electrolux 506 go on me too, the surpressor is located in the handle grip on these and theres nothing worse than having something go pop in your hand! ahem....lol
