Shares listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange have lost nearly a fifth of their market value in the last five months, causing investors to lose 568 billion shillings in total. On the 5th of April, the bourse achieved its peak performance when the market capitalisation stood at 2.896 trillion shillings, but by yesterday, it had dropped to 2.328 trillion shillings. Analysts say that this bear run has largely been attributed to the losses and shrinking profits posted by listed companies, as well as many foreign investors exiting the NSE. Another factor cited as having been critical in the fall in the value of the share prices is the uncertainty around the removal of the restrictions on interest rates that were imposed two years ago.
