DIY home router cooling fan hack. Big benefit: this "mod" should not impact the product warranty since only the plastic base is affected (and that's not usually submitted for warranty matters).

This router is on 24x7 in a home office that is only air conditioned when someone is working in there.

Summary: In the wooden box beneath the router stand there is a small pie fan that blows up into the vents of the router. The fan is powered from the 12 volt router source, but I run it at 9 volts (via a 7809 device) to reduce fan speed / noise. The 9 volt thing is optional; a 12 volt fan can be run directly from the power supply. The holes need to be cleaned of dust occasionally, for both efficiency and safety (prevent the fan / router from overheating).

UPDATE 20131127: this router has become my longest running, so it seems like this really helps.

Materials Used:
- Wooden "box" (from electrical supply store. Sized for router)
- 12 volt computer fan (good quality for quiet and long life)
- 12 volt wall wart (sized to prevent overheating.)
- Fuse to protect fan / wall wart.
- 7809 voltage regulator (optional).
- Misc: Soldering stuff, electrical tape, shrink wrap, screws, etc.
