Mr Carl Pope, Senior Strategic Advisor for The Sierra Club, USA during the session 'Adapting to the Impacts of Climate Change and Mitigating Emissions of Greenhouse Gases and Associated Co-Benefits' at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit 2013. Speaking at the Summit, Mr Pope stressed that humans need to use ecosystems to build resilience. We are not going to be engineered into resilience. He said the only thing smart, strong and wise enough to deal with climate change is a plant. And therefore we need to restore the biological productivity of every landscape to deal with climate change. A planet of 7 billion people, a number that is growing every minute, is likely to face increased conflicts over scarce resources. So unless we begin to use our resources efficiently, we are likely to reach tipping points that will not only harm our own well-being, but also that of our future generations. The decisions we make today will define our tomorrow. It is in this context that DSDS 2013 deliberated upon 'The Global Challenge of Resource Efficient Growth and Development'.
