Questions over the Highway 109 road widening project in Sumner County have residents and businesses alike worried. Joyce Hester takes pride in her property... And while she works on the land she owns and loves... She can't help but think road the project could take up a large chunk of her land. Even though she admits the busy road does need to be widened from two lanes to four... Hester says, "It will be nice when they get through with it - but I wouldn't want it up on my front door." Two weeks ago TDOT held a preliminary design meeting where they were able to show residents and business owners their ideas and get some input. Currently there are two options for the road either a boulevard type look with a grassy median or just a turning lane down the center. At the meeting there was an overwhelming amount of support for the turning lane. B.J. Doughty with TDOT says, "That is certainly a much different look to have a center turn lane all the way the length of the project rather then to have some decorative aspects that sort of help beautify the entrance to the city." Businesses along the road say while they are concerned about customers avoiding the area during the 18-24 months that it will take to complete the project- Their biggest problem is making sure it's easy for customers to get to them after the widening is complete. Denise Douglas, Manger Tom's Blue Moon BBQ says, "Ee would like to have the turning lane because if you've got the median there is only a certain- you have to go so far down to turn around or whatever now that is a concern because people will say if I have to do all of the then I don't want to mess with going to that business." Ground breaking for the project is still a ways down the road. TDOT will first have to review the public's comments and acquire property through Right of Way. TDOT has assured businesses along Highway 109 that they will make sure there is always access to their business during construction. _______________ Stay up to date with our social media: WZTV on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/foxnashville/ WZTV on Twitter: https://twitter.com/FOXNashville Subscribe to WZTV on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCouaZqnOJay2Lacj8fomO3Q/?sub_confirmation=1 Daily News Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0NoehDI3QdbEPqmgxbSwBNiScxUXS0PR For more information, visit https://fox17.com/ Have a news tip?
