Raw banana or plantain fry is a tasty and crispy side dish for rice varieties. It goes well with rasam, sambar, kuzhambu, curd rice and variety rice.

Plantains are rich in calcium and it is customary in south India to cook a plantain dish on new moon day. Plantains are highly nutritious and the starch in it does not harm us or raise glucose levels.  

Shallow frying makes this dish delicious. It is easy, simple and quick to cook too.

Ingredients:

To boil:

Plantain - 2 ( cut as thick round pieces)
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Red chilli powder - 1/4 tsp
Salt as required

To coat:

Sambar powder - 2 tsp
Gram flour - 2 tblsp
Asafoetida - a pinch
Cumin powder - 1 tsp
Salt a little


Oil - for shallow fry
Curry leaves - 5
Lemon juice - from half lemon

Method: 

* Boil water.  Add turmeric , chilli powder and salt and cook plantain pieces for 2 min

* Drain the water completely.

* Add cumin, sambar powder, asafoetida, gram flour and a little salt. Mix well.

* Heat a pan and add oil. Arrange the pieces and shallow  fry them along with a few curry leaves.

* Flip and cook both sides.

* Remove from heat. Squeeze half a lemon over it.

Toss well and enjoy with hot rice varieties.
