The biggest problem is the voltage drop in the switching transistor that limits the amount of voltage and power that is passed on to the joule thief circuit. So I am scrapping the orignal design, and using a NCP1402 constant voltage IC manufactured by On Semiconductor. It provides much more light and is more effecient then the joule thief, plus it also has it's own on/off switch built-in to the chip so we don't lose power in a transistor. The new prototype boards should be in by the end of January 2013, and I'll try to make a video on it's performance as soon as I can. background music provided by MitiS under creative commons free use license.
