Have you ever heard someone say "the writing was on the wall" to indicate that some inevitable outcome was quickly approaching? The phrase has its roots in the book of Daniel when a hand suddenly appeared and wrote several words on a wall during a massive party thrown by King Belshazzar of Babylon. As you might imagine, the vibe of the party was a bit thrown off after that. Belshazzar swore to promote whoever could interpret the writing to a position of great power within the kingdom, and as he had before, Daniel stood up to face the seemingly impossible task. He wanted no reward, but merely to convey God's message:  That the days of the Babylonian kingdom would very soon be over.

Belshazzar had to know it was coming; his army had been decimated by the Meads and Persians only days before, and he would die that very night. It's likely why he threw the party, as one "last hurrah." But God, through Daniel, told Belshazzar that his accomplishments and pride meant nothing in the end. It wouldn't be the last time we'd see the hand of God in the world. It would appear again once more in the form of Jesus hundreds of years later, signaling that the balance of power in the kingdom of this Earth was changing once more. Remember:  God has put the world on notice that that the end of evil is nigh, even if the new kingdom hasn't been established here just yet.
